On-chain voluntary carbon markets: lessons from KlimaDAO

DAO TOKYO 2023 illuminated signage with cherry blossoms at Kanda Myojin Hall, Tokyo - the edition where KlimaDAO offset the conference emissions, a first for a DAO event

DAO Tokyo debuted in April 2023 as a focused gathering of decentralized organization builders, hosted by Fracton Ventures at the Kanda Myojin Hall. Over 400 participants joined, with roughly 90 percent of the audience travelling in from outside Japan. Giorgio presented the story of KlimaDAO, walking through the legal structures behind the protocol, the interaction with off-chain carbon registries, and the governance design that had allowed the community to coordinate meaningful capital flows into voluntary carbon retirement.

Acting as the representative of KlimaDAO in Japan, Giorgio also personally organized the partnership between DAO TOKYO and KlimaDAO that made the event the first DAO conference in the world to offset its CO2 emissions on-chain. He negotiated the scope of the collaboration with the Fracton Ventures team, coordinated the measurement of the conference footprint, and executed the retirement of the carbon credits through KlimaDAO's infrastructure.

In the official recap, the organizers wrote: 'DAO TOKYO collaborates with KlimaDAO. KlimaDAO, a ReFi project helping projects to offset CO2 emissions, wonderfully agreed to offset any carbon emissions at DAO TOKYO. KlimaDAO's mission is to accelerate the delivery of climate finance globally by building transparent and neutral public infrastructure needed to scale up the digital carbon market. This is the first time in the world that a DAO-related event has offset its CO2 emissions. We are passionate about continuing our activities and contributions in the field of DAOs from the perspective of public goods.'
